How to Pick the Right Boots

Sep 26, 2021

The guide to choosing high-performance tactical footwear.

Proper footwear is arguably the most crucial piece of equipment you will ever own. Without the right boots, you cannot protect your feet from the environment, and your performance will suffer. Unfortunately, choosing the ideal tactical boots can get overwhelming. There are hundreds of companies claiming to make the best footwear for rucking and military training. So how can you make sure that the boots you choose will be effective in the field and serve their purpose?

In this OA guide, we’ll walk you through all of the most important aspects to consider when choosing tactical footwear. After reading this blog, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and strategies you need to confidently buy tactical boots.

Measure Your Boot the Right Way
As you might have guessed, the first step to buying tactical footwear is making sure that you purchase the correct size. While most US companies try to standardize their sizing, slight differences in design can make some boots fit tighter than others. That’s why we always recommend trying on boots before buying.

To try on your boots properly, the first thing you must do is ensure that you are wearing realistic socks. You likely won’t be wearing thin dress socks while using your tactical footwear, so make sure that you try them on with the socks you’ll have on during training. Next, keep in mind that your feet will swell slightly after long periods of marching or standing, so you must ensure that the boots will stay comfortable even when your feet swell. You can simulate this swelling by walking around for an hour before trying on your tactical footwear. While your feet won’t be as swollen as during rucking, the fit will still be more realistic than if you had been sitting in the car before sizing the boots.

Features Make a Difference
Features can make or break your boot. Before choosing which pair to buy, find out which features they offer and which they omit. Keep your future training in mind and select boots that include necessary features while minimizing useless ones. For tactical footwear, some of the most important features include waterproofing/water resistance, ankle support, and breathability. If you live in cold climates where ice and snow are common, slip-proof soles might be a feature worth seeking.

Keep in mind: all features have their advantages and disadvantages – so only get the necessary ones. For example, steel/composite toe boots will protect your feet, but they also weigh down your boot. If you live and train in a hot and arid climate, you likely don’t need boots that will stop you from slipping on ice. Choose your features wisely – more isn’t always better.

Know Your Price Range
Boots are a tool to be used. They are made to protect your feet by absorbing the impact and stress of training. As such, they will eventually get worn down, scratched, scuffed, and damaged. With that being said, buy boots that you can afford and that you will be comfortable using in harsh environments. Choose footwear that has the features you need but is also at a price point that won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

If you’re buying your first pair of tactical boots that you plan on only using for training, getting footwear with slightly fewer features and a better price might be something to consider. Then, when you’re ready to head to selection or start a serious training program, get a more reliable pair of boots that you reserve for the most intense exercises.
